LimeSurvey Hosting Plans

Start on shared. Scale to VPS when responses spike.

Most surveys collect responses happily on shared LAMP hosting. When a distribution wave pushes your response volume up, or a high-stakes research project needs guaranteed CPU and RAM, the very same cPanel and Softaculous experience carries straight over to a Managed VPS.

Why Ultra LimeSurvey Hosting

Built for the LAMP stack LimeSurvey runs on.

The pieces that matter when you collect responses on your own server, included on every plan.

PHP & MariaDB

The classic LAMP stack LimeSurvey is built for. PHP 7.4 through 8.3 selectable per-domain, with MariaDB databases provisioned through cPanel.

Softaculous 1-Click

LimeSurvey installs in two clicks from cPanel with database credentials, admin account, and SSL configured. Same flow for upgrades.

Data Stays on Your Server

Response data lives in your account on hardware we own and operate. No SaaS export caps. No third-party broker between you and your respondents.

GDPR-Friendly

Self-hosting gives you direct control over where respondent data lives, who can access it, how long it is retained, and when it is deleted.

24/7 In-House Support

Real Ultra employees, not a third-party call center. Plugin conflicts, PHP version questions, database issues, migration help, all from the same team.

99.9% Uptime

Dell PowerEdge hardware on RAID and UPS, on-site technicians in the same building as the racks. When something breaks, the fix happens in minutes.

Self-Hosted Surveys

Your respondents. Your database. Your rules.

Run LimeSurvey on the LAMP stack it was designed for, with Softaculous installing it in two clicks and your response data sitting in a MariaDB database you fully control.

Real custodians for your research data

Your LimeSurvey install and its response database run on Dell PowerEdge hardware we own, not lease, racked in our own space with our staff on-site. When a cron reminder or an import needs attention, a real US-based engineer answers your ticket in about 12 minutes, so the data your ethics board cares about stays with people you can actually reach.

Why researchers self-host their surveys.

Picture a research team fielding a sensitive survey. On a SaaS platform, every response lands in someone else's database, subject to their export caps, their retention policy, and their per-response pricing as the sample grows. That is a hard conversation to have with an ethics board.

Self-hosted LimeSurvey 6.x flips that. Response data lives in your own MariaDB database on your own account, where you control retention and access, which makes a GDPR Article 28 posture far simpler to defend. There are no per-response fees and no export limits, so you can dump to CSV, SPSS, R, or STATA whenever you like. Free SSL encrypts every submission in transit, and real cron drives your invitation and reminder schedule on a clock.

Self-hosted surveys, on hardware we own.

LimeSurvey hosting built for data sovereignty.

LimeSurvey is a full-featured survey and data collection platform with support for 30+ question types, conditional logic, multilingual surveys, and GDPR-compliant data handling. Running your own LimeSurvey instance means your response data stays on your server under your control.

Ultra LimeSurvey Hosting runs that stack on cPanel and CloudLinux on Dell PowerEdge hardware we own outright, not leased from a hyperscaler. Softaculous installs LimeSurvey in two clicks with the right database credentials, the admin account, and a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate already in place. PHP 7.4 through 8.3 is selectable per-domain, MariaDB databases are provisioned through cPanel, and the daily JetBackup with 30-day restore points means you can roll a survey database back if a configuration change goes wrong. For researchers, NGOs, healthcare organizations, and academic teams who need a defensible answer to "where does the respondent data live and who can read it," self-hosting on infrastructure operated by a single 23-year-old US company is meaningfully different from a SaaS broker.

If LimeSurvey is part of a broader self-hosted application stack, our Application Hosting page lists every platform in the Softaculous catalog that runs on the same shared LAMP infrastructure, including osTicket, phpBB, MediaWiki, Moodle, and dozens more. The LimeSurvey entry on our hosting features page covers where it fits in the broader supported stack. The Managed VPS upgrade path is in place the moment your response volume outgrows shared hosting, with the same cPanel and Softaculous experience and root access for tuning MariaDB and PHP-FPM to your survey workload.

LimeSurvey requirements we already meet

Everything LimeSurvey expects from its host, ready before your first survey.

LimeSurvey wants a modern PHP runtime, a MariaDB database, a real cron for scheduled work, and enough isolation to stay responsive while a fieldwork wave comes in. Ultra ships all of it on the standard plan, so a research team, NGO, or academic department can go from install to live fieldwork without a support ticket.

  • One-click Softaculous install. Stand up a fresh LimeSurvey instance in two clicks with the database, admin account, and free SSL already wired up, then upgrade the same way when a new release lands.
  • PHP 8.x with per-domain selection. LimeSurvey 6.x targets PHP 8.1 or newer, and PHP 7.4 through 8.3 is selectable per docroot through cPanel's PHP Selector, so each install runs on the version its release expects.
  • MariaDB you fully own. Response tables live in a MariaDB database provisioned through cPanel, dumpable any time via phpMyAdmin or mysqldump, with no SaaS export cap between you and your data.
  • Real cron for scheduled survey tasks. Schedule cron jobs in cPanel to fire LimeSurvey's command-line runner on your own interval, so email invitations, reminders, and expiry handling go out on time rather than only when someone loads a page.
  • Headroom for concurrent respondents. CloudLinux isolation gives your account its own guaranteed CPU, RAM, and process slice, so a burst of respondents hitting one survey at once stays snappy and a busy neighbor never spills onto you.
  • Free SSL and free migration. A free Let's Encrypt certificate keeps every respondent connection encrypted for trust, and our in-house team will move an existing self-hosted LimeSurvey instance across for free.
FAQ

What LimeSurvey customers ask before choosing a plan.

The questions our team gets every week. If yours isn't here, drop us a line.

Which LimeSurvey versions are supported?

Softaculous one-click install ships the current LimeSurvey Community Edition (currently the 6.x line) and a Long-Term Support (LTS) release alongside it. Older 5.x and 3.x installs are also fully supported on the LAMP stack if you are migrating an existing instance. PHP 7.4 through 8.3 is selectable per-domain via cPanel's PHP Selector, so any LimeSurvey version's PHP requirement is covered.

Is LimeSurvey installed with one click?

Yes. LimeSurvey is in the Softaculous catalog included on every plan. Two clicks in cPanel and you have a working install at your domain with database credentials, admin account, and SSL already configured. Upgrades through Softaculous are also one click, with automatic file and database backup before the upgrade applies.

Can I export my LimeSurvey response data?

LimeSurvey's built-in export covers CSV, Excel, SPSS, R, STATA, PDF, HTML, and Microsoft Word formats for response data, plus structured XML for survey definitions. The full MariaDB database is yours to dump via phpMyAdmin or mysqldump whenever you want a portable copy. Nothing is locked behind a paid tier or a SaaS export limit.

Can I migrate from SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics, or another survey platform?

Yes. LimeSurvey can import survey definitions from XML, CSV, and other LimeSurvey installations. For SurveyMonkey or Qualtrics, you typically export your survey to PDF or CSV, then rebuild the structure in LimeSurvey using its survey designer (which is faster than it sounds thanks to bulk question import). Response data can be imported as CSV. Our support team can help with the file copy and database setup if you are migrating an existing self-hosted LimeSurvey instance.

Is LimeSurvey hosting GDPR-friendly?

Self-hosting LimeSurvey on your own account gives you direct control over respondent data: where it lives, who can access it, how long it is retained, and when it is deleted. LimeSurvey itself includes GDPR-oriented features like anonymous responses, data anonymization, configurable retention, consent statements, and per-respondent data export and erasure. Combined with hosting on hardware we own and manage in-house, you have a defensible position for GDPR Article 28 data processing.

What PHP versions does LimeSurvey support on Ultra?

PHP 7.4, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 are available per-domain via cPanel's PHP Selector. LimeSurvey 6.x targets PHP 8.1 or newer and we default new installs to 8.2 for the best balance of compatibility and performance. CloudLinux HardenedPHP back-ports critical security fixes to legacy PHP 7.x branches if you need to keep an older LimeSurvey install running.

Can I scale to a VPS for very high response volumes?

Yes. Shared hosting comfortably handles small to mid-sized surveys (hundreds to low thousands of responses). For very high-volume research projects, sudden mass-distribution campaigns, or surveys that need dedicated CPU and RAM, our Managed VPS plans are the next step up. VPS gives you guaranteed CPU and RAM slices, root access for tuning MariaDB and PHP-FPM to your survey workload, and the same cPanel and Softaculous experience for LimeSurvey upgrades.
